Running a football practice or a game day involves a lot of gear that isn't cleats and pads. Coaches carry play sheets, coordinators track down-and-distance, quarterbacks read plays off a wristband, and the chain crew keeps the game moving on the sideline. This collection covers the tools that make all of that work.

What each category covers:

Wrist coaches are laminated play cards worn on a QB's or linebacker's wrist, showing the plays or defensive calls for that game. Formats range from single-window designs to triple-window playmakers that hold expanded call sheets. Most fit adult and older youth wrists; sizing is on the individual product page.

Stat books and play charts are the paper backbone of a coaching staff. Stat books track individual and team statistics through a full season. Field charts and play option charts are pre-printed sheets that coordinators mark up during the game to track down-and-distance, tendencies, and calls by situation.

Coaching boards are handheld dry-erase boards with the football field pre-printed. Coaches use them during timeouts, halftime, or between plays to diagram adjustments for the whole unit.

Chain crew vests identify the sideline crew responsible for the chains and down marker. Bright, high-visibility color so officials and coaches can see them at all times.

Football Coaching Gear FAQs

A wrist coach (also called a wristband playbook or playmaker) is a laminated play sheet carried in a wristband sleeve and worn on the forearm during games and practices. It displays the plays, formations, or defensive calls the player needs during the game - a quarterback might have the offensive play list, while a middle linebacker might carry defensive checks. Wrist coaches are common from middle school through college, while younger teams often rely on hand signals or verbal play calls. If a player is expected to manage a multi-play offense or defense, a wrist coach helps reduce missed calls and makes communication from the sideline faster and more reliable.

It depends on the style. Single-window wrist coaches display one play sheet at a time, while trifold and multi-panel designs provide additional space for larger playbooks or separate offensive, defensive, and special teams call sheets. The actual number of plays depends on the layout, font size, and how much information each coach includes.

A stat book tracks the numerical results of a season, including completions, rushing yards, tackles, penalties, and other game statistics. It becomes part of the team's season records and provides a historical view of player and team performance. Play charts, on the other hand, are working documents used during games to organize and record play calls, helping coaches track what was called, how it worked, and what adjustments should be made. Most programs use both - the play chart stays on the sideline during the game, while the stat book is updated afterward.
